Into Ecuador’s Living Cloud Forest
A few hours northwest of Quito, roads climb towards the western slopes of the Andes and gradually disappear beneath dense vegetation. Here, warm air rising from the Pacific meets the mountains, creating a landscape where clouds move through the trees and moisture sustains an extraordinary concentration of life.
Mashpi lies within a protected reserve of approximately 2,500 hectares, encompassing both cloud forest and tropical rainforest. Mosses, orchids, bromeliads and giant ferns occupy almost every available surface, while birds, butterflies, frogs and mammals inhabit different levels of the forest.

Walk to the Magnolia or Copal waterfalls, pause beside moss-covered rocks and listen as the sound of the forest gives way to falling water. Visit the Life Center, where telescopes and binoculars reveal tanagers, toucans, butterflies and other wildlife moving through the surrounding canopy. At the Hummingbird Station, patience is frequently rewarded by flashes of iridescent colour hovering only moments away.
After dark, the character of the forest changes completely. Guided night walks reveal frogs, insects and other nocturnal creatures that remain almost invisible during the day.

Between Forest Floor and Canopy
Some of Mashpi’s most distinctive experiences reveal the forest from above.
The Dragonfly canopy gondola travels through and above the trees, offering an expansive view across the reserve. From this perspective, the seemingly impenetrable forest becomes a succession of ridges, valleys and layers of green stretching towards the horizon.
The two-person Sky Bike offers a more intimate encounter. Suspended high above the forest floor, guests pedal at their own pace and can pause to observe the canopy beneath them.
These experiences are adventurous without being extreme. Their real value lies in providing access to an environment normally hidden from human view—the extraordinary world that exists between the forest floor and the sky.
A Glass Cocoon in the Forest
Mashpi’s contemporary steel, stone and glass architecture creates a striking contrast with the dense forest surrounding it. Yet the building does not attempt to compete with the landscape. Its expansive windows bring the forest continuously into view, allowing mist, rain, changing light and passing birds to become part of the interior experience.
Rooms and suites are calm, contemporary and deliberately uncluttered. Floor-to-ceiling windows replace conventional artwork with constantly changing views of the canopy, while natural materials and subdued colours create a sense of warmth after a day outside.
The larger Yaku Suites offer additional space and deep soaking bathtubs positioned beside forest-facing windows. Wayra Rooms provide the same immersive relationship with the landscape in a more compact setting.
Between excursions, guests can return to the lodge for a quiet lunch, restorative spa treatment or simply sit beside the glass and watch the cloud forest disappear and reappear through the mist.
A Forest Alive with Discovery

More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the surrounding forest, alongside an extraordinary variety of butterflies, amphibians, plants and mammals. Some encounters are immediate and colourful; others require patience, sharp observation and the experience of a knowledgeable guide.
