At almost 600 miles from Ecuador South America in the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are one of the remotest places in the world. The 19 island-archipelago was the world’s first UNESCO Heritage Site and is home to an astonishing 9,000 species of flora and fauna and is by far the strangest, most wonderful place on Earth.
The islands boast one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world and due to a lack of natural predators, most of these creatures are completely fearless. Around 20% of its indigenous wildlife cannot be found anywhere else on the globe.
The Galapagos giant tortoise is arguably the most famous species inhabiting the island. They can weigh up to 450 pounds and typically live for over 100 years. They are docile creatures, known to lumber along, sunbathe and nibble at vegetation.
Marine iguanas are reptiles that can live and feed in the ocean. You can identify marine iguanas by their black, leathery skin, and their tendency to sneeze, which is their way of eliminating salt from their bodies.
The Galápagos penguin is a penguin endemic to the Galápagos Islands. It is the only penguin found north of the equator. The cool waters of the region’s currents allow it to survive despite the tropical latitude.
The Galápagos sea lion is a fairly social, they are often spotted sun-bathing on sandy shores or rock groups or gliding gracefully through the surf. Their loud bark, playful nature, and graceful agility in water make them the “welcoming party” of the islands. They are the smallest sea lion species.
Blue-footed boobies are aptly named, and males take great pride in their fabulous feet. During mating rituals, male birds show off their feet to prospective mates with a high-stepping strut. The bluer the feet, the more attractive the mate.
Sally Lightfoot crabs are brightly-coloured coastal scavengers, found in the Galapagos Islands. They can be seen feeding in large groups on most beaches and in shallow water all around the Islands. When to see them: Primarily during the day time, at all times of year.
